Deep Water Soloing
Mekong 1947 Guidebook
Written by Branly
About the Mekong 1947 Cave: The name comes from the red-blood graffiti at the entrance of the cave: « Le Mékong 1947 ».  The cave is reminiscent of an underground sewer, a gaping entrance to a nefarious netherworld or maybe an old Eastern-European factory before the fall of the Iron Curtain.  I would imagine that the deranged draftsman responsible for the cave completed his work 1947, hence the tag.  Either way it’s badass.

Topo Yen Ngua
Written by Branly

Tien Ong Guidebook
Written by Branly
This small cave is located near the Taxi Girl area, bolted by Arnaud Petit in 2002, which is located on the Hang Tien Ong Island (“silver cave"  in English). It will be easier to call it Tien Ong area. It is divided into 2 parts close to each other: one is a small cave, the other one is a steep wall with huge stalactites.

The Gate Guidebook
Written by Branly
The name « The Gate » (cua âu in vietnamese) is just small, out of the way crag.  It’s quiet difficult to find the name of all the geographic areas, places and names in Halong Bay. The Gate is a unique formation as a natural amphitheatre opens to the sea. This cliff is located around the same area as Mekong 1947 Cave.

Nam Cat Guidebook
Written by Branly
The Deep Water Soloing - Psicobloc / wall of Nam Cat (called « Hawaii 5-0 Wall » by Slopony).   A compact rock compared to the rest of the Bay, psicobloc offers some classic routes on varied climbing.  The amalgamation of perverse jugs and cracked-out pockets covering the bloc will leave you reeling, bleeding and hungry for more.  The variation of holds makes this rock a real gem with some longer, higher routes

Topo Hon But
Written by Branly

Floating Village Guidebook
Written by Branly
As you can guess, the floating village’s cliff is located close to a floating village. The village is an amalgamation of fish breeding, kayak rental, tourist overnight accommodation, night karaoke and gambling. You can easily identify the cliff thanks to its shape (looks like a cake). During high-tide, this spot is perfect for those who want to start DWS. When the tide becomes lower, the start becomes a jump start, making it much more difficult.

Hang Ca Guidebook
Written by Branly
Hang Ca (« the fish cave ») is well known for its three hidden lagoons where kayaks like to paddle around. Hang Ca is an ideal compromise for a mixed group of climbers and non-climbers. The later will enjoy kayaking in the lagoons. The routes we identified are located both at the entrance and the way-out of the first lagoon.

Deep Water Soloing, or Wild Climbing
Written by Branly

Nowadays, soloing (without any rope and harness) above the water has become fashionable and relatively widespread. As evidence, there is a plethora of terms for this practice : deep water soloing, marine crossings, soledad en aguas profundas, DWS, psicobloc... Additionally,...

Advices, or how to avoid silly accidents in DWS
Written by Branly

Pre-requisites :

Know how to swim: you can DWS with those fancy orange rescue suits, but your chin and your armpits will never forgive you. Always remember: avoid vicious jellyfish (unless you want your friends to pee on you, or you want to pee on yourself—it really does work to take the sting and poison away, not that we know from experience),...

Deep Water Soloing in Halong Bay, the Myth
Written by Branly
Up to now, Deep Water Soloing is definitely the best climbing activity in Ha Long bay. An enchanting and mythical landscape, a feeling of delirium, no worrying and wondering  about corroded bolts (bear in mind that most of the equipped routes in the Bay are not climbable anymore, the bolts being badly oxidised and dangerous to use, except the latest SloPony openings in Cat Ba and...
